Mermen have appeared through the ages, generally as androgynous creatures styled after the prototypical merman Triton. Perhaps this genderless characterization is a result of the rise of the mermaid as the most frequently spotted half-human, half-fish creature in popular culture. The infrequent appearance of the male of this species, raises a comparison, or a type of sorority with the loosely female mermaid.
